Will I need to wear a retainer?
In order for your teeth to remain straight after an Invisalign® treatment, you will need to wear a retainer. If you do not wear a retainer, your teeth will gradually move back to their original positions and you will have to decide whether or not you want to go through treatment again. We invite you to contact our office if you have further questions about retainers.
How often should I wear my retainer?
Your orthodontist will be able to give you specific details on how long you should wear your retainer and when you should wear it. Typically, you will wear your retainer during the day immediately following your treatment. After a sufficient amount of time has passed, you may be able to switch to wearing your retainer only at night.
What should I eat and drink when I wear my retainer?
You should avoid hot drinks when you are wearing your retainer. The heat can damage the plastic in your retainer, causing it to lose its shape. If your retainer has been damaged in any way, it is important to have it replaced immediately because a bad retainer cannot keep your teeth properly aligned. If you want to eat or drink anything hot, we advise you to remove your retainer first.
How do I take care of my retainer?
Your retainer is an important step of your post-treatment care and should be cleaned daily. Your orthodontist should give you a container where you can store your retainer when it is not in use. Typically, we suggest cleaning your retainer immediately after removing it and rinsing it before placing it back in your mouth. This helps to keep your retainer and your mouth clean.
