What is root canal therapy?
Root canal therapy is the removal of a tooth’s pulp from the center of the tooth. The space is then cleaned and sealed. In many cases, root canal therapy can save a tooth from extraction.
When is root canal therapy needed?
When a tooth has a deep infection, root canal therapy in Los Angeles, California, may be recommended. Damage to a tooth’s dental pulp can occur because of an injury or because of a cavity that went untreated and became severe.
What should I expect during treatment?
First, a local anesthetic will be used to numb the area. Then Dr. David Shouhed will make an access hole in the tooth so that the infected pulp can be removed. The pulp and any debris will be carefully removed through this hole. The inside of the tooth will be thoroughly cleaned and dried. Then the area will be filled with gutta percha and the access hole will be closed with a dental filling. In many cases, a dental crown will be placed to protect and support the tooth.
What happens after treatment?
After having a root canal, you may need to come back to Smile Perfector Dental Group for a follow-up appointment in which the tooth is X-rayed to ensure that all of the infection was successfully removed. A tooth that has been treated with root canal therapy can usually stay healthy for the rest of your life. However, the health of the tooth depends on how well you care for it. Be sure to uphold efficient dental hygiene at home and to make and keep regular dental appointments.
